In the 1950s and 1960s, the French designer Pierre Paulin created an iconic lounge chair which featured an organic form that looked something like an orange slice when viewed from above. This design has since been used in many Scandinavian-style interiors by famous architects such as Alvar Aalto and Juhani Pallasmaa, which makes sense given its rustic, natural appearance. The chair was created in 1957 and has proven to be timeless ever since; it’s considered modern even today.

Pierre Paulin was born on January 7, 1926 in Bourg-la-Reine, a suburb of Paris. After obtaining his degree in architectural studies from the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in 1948, he pursued his studies at the Sorbonne and graduated with degrees in philosophy and history. In 1953, Pierre Paulin founded his own design company with offices in Paris. In 1955 he became a member of the jury at the International Exhibition of Modern Furniture in New York. In 1957, he designed one of his most famous pieces: 'the orange slice chair'.
Pierre Paulin is also well known for designing products such as lamps and tables.
